wear something that has a heel,
ADD: and just tell you trainer teh boots are coming tomorrow hopefulyl she’ll understand
Add: And I am agreeing with “Support our Troops” about teh no tennis hsoe thing, it is very unsafe, but:
on peoples first lesson all you do is wlk around on a very good beginner horse. i dont think your in to much danger, but just call your trainer and ask
March 2, 2010 - 2:11 am
Wellies are fine.
If you dont have them, you can wear trainers, for one lesson,
March 2, 2010 - 2:57 am
DO NOT wear tennis shoes or any other athletic shoe. Wear some sort of dress shoe or lace up boot.
Tennis shoes can get stuck in the stirrups.
When you’re with her, ask her what boots are acceptable and where you can purchase them.
March 2, 2010 - 3:28 am
thin wellies will be good i have some riding wellingtons they are much comfier as all my riding boots seem 2 rub me or just wear normal wellies 4 today and make sure you get some riding boots
March 2, 2010 - 4:20 am
Bring what you have to show your instructor and let her pick out what she feels would be appropriate. Explain to your instructor that you’re getting your riding boots tomorrow. She’ll understand.
Bring: Sturdy lace-up shoe – preferably with a leather sole. Cowboy style boots with low heel
Do not bring – “dress” boots with a high heel, combat-style boots – or anything with a thick, “waffle” style sole.
If you absolutely have nothing at all else, wear your sneakers – but they will most certainly be frowned upon.
March 2, 2010 - 4:28 am
İ’d say some caterpillar or timberland boots would do you lots of good but if you don’t have them you can wear converse and long socks over your jods or breeches=)
March 2, 2010 - 4:50 am
Riding boots are designed so that your feet cannot slip through teh stirrups but also so they will slide out of them easily if you fall off. For this reason they are smooth on the bottom and have a small heel.
Try and find a shoe that looks similar to this, it is better to wear grippy shoes than ones without a heel. Sometimes in summer I wear my walking boots, but make sure your stirrups are wide enough as these have good grip.
I’m sure your teacher will understand, I didn’t get all my kit until after my first lesson as my Mum refused to buy it before she knew I would continue.
Good luck with your lesson!
March 2, 2010 - 5:05 am
Sneakers will be perfectly fine. As long as what ever you wear does not have a tread, is not super wide, and is closed, it will be ok for your first lesson.
Starlight 1 – in the horse whisperer if you remember correctly the girl was wearing RIDING boots. and get your facts straight. she does not die from getting dragged. she dies from sliding down a hill with her horse on top of her then getting hit by a huge truck. had she not gotten hit by the truck she would have lived. I take it you have never touched the book. the fall snapped her thigh bone, and knocked her out that is all, Gulliver got up at the bottom of the hill, while he had hurt his leg. Grace leaned over from pilgrim tried to grab his reins, and the truck came along, smacked into Judith and Gulliver and then Pilgrim reared up, the truck hit pilgrim and ran over graces leg. and sneakers ARE fine for a first lesson. shes going to be walking, MAYBE doing a small trot, it is most likely going to be on a bomb proof old lesson horse (or I would hope so). and when you say you need a two inch heel I really question if you ARE a qualified riding instructor. I just measured and my boots have an inch heel (and my tall boots I’m quite frankly guessing have less). your foot can also get caught even with a heel, pop your heels at a trot with a loose seat, and your sturrips will be round your ankles. So as she would not be doing much, yes sneakers would be fine.
March 2, 2010 - 5:53 am
Just tell her that you don’t have riding boots yet. Wear anything you have that has a small heel. Make sure its comfortable. Don’t wear sneakers or anything like that though. Don’t worry about it! Your instructor will understand. Not many people have everything they need on their first lesson. Have fun! Hope I helped!
March 2, 2010 - 6:09 am
A good quality shoe with a quarter inch heel. No buckles that can get caught in the stirrups. No sandals or trainers.
March 2, 2010 - 6:23 am
something with a heal
and something that’s supportive.
don’t ride in high-heels. haha
rubber boots work great
i wear them when I’m too lazy to go in the tack room and change my boots
March 2, 2010 - 6:28 am
anything sturdy with a heel of an inch or so. she won get mad at you – its not your fault!!!! do they have boots u can borrow or rent if necessary?? avoid wellies or trainers tho – many riding schools will not let you ride in them. have fun at your lesson
March 2, 2010 - 6:52 am
First, to Loggy: Sneakers are NOT perfectly fine- in fact, they have the potential to be DEADLY to this young rider if her horse should spook at something and she comes off and gets her foot caught. Have you ever seen the movie ” The Horse Whisperer”? The accident depicted in that movie shows all too clearly what can happen to riders who fall and get the their feet caught in the stirrups- and in this case, the little girl in question DIED from being dragged. While that movie is a work of fiction, the type of accident depicted in it is NOT. Sneakers are NOT appropriate footwear for riding- and neither are sandals, tevas, or any other type of open toed shoe without a heel of at least 2 inches.
I know what I am talking about here, because I am a certified instructor myself- and I have taught lessons successfully for several years now. To the asker: make sure you wear long pants ( they don’t have to be breeches, jeans will work just fine and are much easier to care for, not to mention far less expensive) and sturdy, closed toed shoes with a heel of at least 2 inches. You also need to wear a well fitting safety helmet- and if your instructor or trainer tries to tell you that you don’t need one, then DON’T GET ON THE HORSE !!! Most reputable trainers are safety conscious and will require helmet use from their students, but there are always one or two who try to avoid this for whatever reason.
Otherwise, just wear whatever clothing is comfortable- but make sure that you dress for the weather and the temperature. This means that if it’s cold enough that you need a coat, you should wear it. Good luck.
March 2, 2010 - 7:35 am
wear wellies if u have dem if u dont where something with a heal even runners its fine if your just starting i’d say thats happened to your trainer loads of times!
hope it helps! xXx Emma

Anything with a heel. Do you have any work boots, cowboy boots, or anything like that?
March 2, 2010 - 8:36 am
i got my boots at pay less, they have a heel and stop just above the ankle- i dont compete so they work fine when i jump or work dressage or just trail ride.
hope it helped!
March 2, 2010 - 9:05 am
Wear something that is not going to slide through the stirrup and has a little bit of heal. So boots with a grip on the bottom of the boot. Try small hiking boots. Also call your teacher and see if she has any you can borrow tonight. My riding teacher always has some. And a shoe that you can still put your heal down. Make sure the shoe is easy to take out of the stirrup so it won’t get cought.
Hope this helps!!!!!!!!

hiking boots, they usually have pretty good traction and a heel
